Trim the Tree, and Your Energy Bills
Posted: Monday, November 09, 2015
Bring in a strand of holiday lights to recycle and get a set of LED lights for free! LED holiday light exchange, now through December 1!

As we enter the holiday season, Stoughton Utilities is reminding our customers about the benefits and advantages of energy efficient lighting options to help customers trim their holiday energy bill. This year, upgrade your lights and celebrate safely and economically!

We recommend replacing traditional holiday lights with a more energy efficient lighting option to decorate the home or business, such as compact fluorescent (CFL) or light-emitting diode (LED) lights. Compared to standard incandescent holiday lights, LED lights offer several advantages. LED holiday lights use up to 90 percent less energy to produce the same amount of light as incandescent bulbs, cost significantly less to operate, and last longer than standard lights. LEDs and CFLs also emit much less heat than traditional lights, greatly reducing the risk of fire hazards, and do not have the same components that cause traditional lights to burn out or combust.

To help you get started, we’ll even give you up to two strands of LED holiday lights for free!
Now through December 1, while supplies last, Stoughton Utilities customers can bring up to two strands of incandescent holiday lights to our office to recycle, as well as either five or more non-perishable food items for the Stoughton Food Pantry or a $5 cash donation to the Stoughton Holiday Fund, and in exchange you will receive up to two strands of new, energy efficient LED holiday lights. Both multi-colored and white LED lights are available.

This offer is limited to up to two strands of exchanged LED lights per utility account, during our office hours of 8:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m., while supplies last.

Help your wallet... and your community
During the 2013 LED holiday light exchange, Stoughton Utilities customers donated 661 pounds of non-perishable food items as well as $810 to the Stoughton Food Pantry. In 2014, customer donations increased to 2,029 food items weighing over one ton, and SU added an additional $200 donation! Let's keep the donations coming, and see if we can make 2015 the most generous season to date!

Always celebrate safely
Stoughton Utilities also wants customers to be aware of safe operating practices for all types of holiday lighting. To start, home and business owners should always remember to turn off tree and decorative lights, both indoors and outdoors. Control devices like motion sensors, timers and power strips are a great way to ensure decorative lights are off. With numerous types and brands of holiday lights available, it is also important to read safety and use directions carefully to ensure lights and decorations are used appropriately and for the intended and approved purpose.

Remember to follow these important electrical safety tips during the holidays!
